Alachua County showdown on the diamond as GHS hosts Buchholz

live broadcastTonight Buchholz and Gainesville continue their annual rivalry.  This time it’s on the diamond as GHS hosts crosstown rival Buchholz in baseball on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Both teams have played well as of late and there’s talent on both sides.

Buchholz (10-4) is led by UF signee Hunter Ruth, Kentucky signee Garrett Hastings and Grinnell College signee Quinton McNitt, among others.  The Class 8A Bobcats, who are ranked 10th in the latest state baseball rankings, have won five of their last six, including a 6-3 win on Thursday night at Class 5A honorable mention The Villages.

Gainesville (12-4) is an honorable mention in Class 7A.  The Hurricanes have their own D-I prospect in Niko Samarkos, who committed to the University of Pittsburgh last week.

Samarkos, who is batting .317, is second on the team with 16 RBIs behind junior Joseph Strong (17 RBIs), who leads the club with 6 HR’s.  Gainesville has won three in a row and seven of its last eight games.
