Our Sonic Player-of-the-game for Tuesday, April 18, is Payton Weinberg of the Gainesville baseball team.
Weinberg set the tone early by retiring the first eight batters he faced, and Gainesville scored the runs it would need in the fourth as GHS defeated visiting P.K. Yonge, 6-2.
The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead in the third on a solo home run by Joseph Strong, his team-leading 8th of the season. The ‘Canes added three more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Kyler Marquis and Kellen Breton and an RBI on a sacrifice fly by Luke Marquis.
That would be the only runs Weinberg would need.
The junior improved to 5-2 on the season by limiting the Blue Wave to just two runs on four hits in his 5.1 innings of work with six strikeouts and only one walk.
Gainesville (17-5) will travel to rival Buchholz this Friday night.
Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Sonic Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift card & certificate courtesy of Sonic of Gainesville & Ocala.
