Gainesville improves to 2-1 on the year by defeating previously undefeated Lake Weir (Ocala), 47-24, on Friday, September 14.

Despite being flagged for 22 penalties for 230 yards, the Hurricanes were very explosive on offense led by senior quarterback Luke Matthews (23-30, 303 yards, 1 TD). Isaac Meacham hauled in 15 receptions for 186 yards and a score.

The visiting Canes rushing attack was a two-headed monster of Niles Cromwell (9 carries for 103 yards & 3 TDs) and KZ Hutchinson (12 carries for 123 yards & 2 TDs).

Sophomore Alex Brown also had an electrifying kick off return for a touchdown.

Defensively, GHS harassed the Lake Weir offense all night. The defense was led by Gentle Hunt (9 tackles) and D’verik Daniel (8 tackles). The defense also forced two interceptions by Meacham and Caleb Washington.

Gainesville returns to Citizens Field this Friday to face an extremely talented team from North Marion (Citra). The game will be broadcast on 92.1 FM in Gainesville and 100.1 FM in Ocala.
