The Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Friday, January 25, is Raquel Cassidy of the P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) girls’ basketball team.
Cassidy, a senior, scored a game-high 18 points as the host Blue Wave never trailed in a 64-37 win over Hawthorne on Friday afternoon at P.K. Yonge in a match-up of state-ranked teams.
P.K. Yonge, ranked 3rd in Class 4A by MaxPreps, won its 12th straight game and improved to 23-1 on the season. The Blue Wave’s only loss came against Bradwell Institute (GA) on December 27.
P.K Yonge got six points apiece from Cassidy and sophomore Mya McGraw in the opening period and moved out to an 18-6 lead heading into the second quarter.
Cassidy’s 10 points in the second period pretty much put the game away for P.K. Yonge as they outscored Hawthorne 21-11 and led 39-17 at the halftime break.
The Blue Wave led by as many as 31 points in the second half before settling for the 27 point victory over the 1A Hornets, who are now 16-3 on the year.
McGraw joined Cassidy in double figures with 12 points, and Naomi Ross chipped in nine points on three three-pointers. Ten Blue Wave players scored in the win.
Only five players scored for Hawthorne, led by junior Jaybria Gray with 11 points. The loss snapped the Hornets’ seven-game winning streak, as they had not lost since December 28.
P.K. Yonge is off until next Thursday when they it hosts Williston in the final regular season game. Hawthorne, ranked 4th in Class 1A, travels to Class 8A Fleming Island (Orange Park) on Monday.
