- January 10, Ike Smith of the Gainesville boys’ basketball team. Smith had 19 points as GHS defeated Buchholz, 76-59, to sweep the series against the Bobcats. The sophomore was one of three players in double figures for the Hurricanes (11-7).
Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week Presented by Mark McGriff’s State Farm Insurance of Gainesville for the week of January 7
- Jake Altom of the Cornerstone Academy (Gainesville) boys’ basketball team. Altom scored 41 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out four assists as Cornerstone Academy won its first-ever district game in boys’ basketball, 63-54, against the top team in District 2A-4, Seven Rivers Christian (Lecanto). He followed that up with 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the Cougars’ 61-54 road win at Ocala Christian Academy just three days later.
