This week’s premier matchup in the area takes place out on US 19 in Cross City. The top two teams in District 7-1A, Trenton and Dixie County, square off in a much anticipated showdown of the 1A powers.

The other big-time matchup takes place in northern

This is also the week that I pay homage to the late Leonard Postero. Many of you older folks may remember him for his “Leonard’s Losers” radio show and column where he’d pick the losers of the week’s popular college and pro football games. Leonard was a Georgia graduate (1943) that loved football dearly. His first show was aired in 1958. Sadly, Leonard passed away in 2001. A group of Athens, GA businessmen attempted to keep the show alive after Leonard retired in 1995, however, the show went dark in 2005 and has yet to be revived. Marion County, as GHS steps down a notch in classification to take on the 4th ranked (5A) North Marion Colts. Both of the teams are coming off big wins and are loaded with talent.

Elsewhere, district play continues this week in Chiefland as Newberry visits the undefeated Indians. Buchholz steps out of district to take on Ocala Vanguard at Citizens Field and, Hawthorne pays a visit to PK Yonge to take on the Blue Wave and former Hornet coach, Kent Johnson.

So, this one’s for you, Leonard.

Week #5:top-games

BIG SCHOOL GAME OF THE WEEK

RV (6A) GHS Purple Hurricanes @ #4 (5A) North Marion Colts

Caelan Christian and the Tropical Nightmares pour their way down 441 to Sparr on Friday night with hopes of washing away the undefeated dreams of the stampeding Colts. This ain’t no ordinary herd of Phillies playing ball in the horse country of northern Marion County, though. GHS’ windstorm will blow into town with a mighty force on Friday night and will do their level best to drown the ponies. These Colts, however, are battle-tested and will find a way to outrun the Canes in a close contest.

Coach T’s Losers: GHS (North Marion 30, GHS 28)

SMALL SCHOOL GAME OF THE WEEK

#2 (1A) Trenton Tigers @ (1A) Dixie County Bears
The Tigers from melonville will wander into Cross City in search of an easy meal on Friday night. They’ve feasted on Bear before and are in the mood for another slaughter in rural Dixie County. These Bears are an angry bunch, however, and have plans on taking these Tigers by their tails and beatin’ the stripes off’em.  It’ll be a sure-fired tussle in the Dixie County woods, and I expect those Bears to come out fired up and ready to squeeze the life out of the Kitties from Gilchrist County. In the end, however, the Big Cats from Trenton will be too fast for the Bears and will claw them to pieces before the night is over.

COACH T’s Losers: Dixie County (Trenton 45, Dixie County 20)

BEST OF THE REST

(1A) Newberry Panthers @ (1A) Chiefland Indians
The Natives are on the warpath in Chiefland as they prepare to ambush the visiting Panthers from Newberry. Newberry’s Black Cats are no strangers to the hunt and creep into redskin country looking to strip the spirit from the upstart Indians. Look for the undefeated Indians to tomahawk the kitties early. In the end, however, the Big Cats will be the ones doing the scalping.

Coach T’s Loser: Chiefland (Newberry 27, Chiefland 20)

(6A) Ocala Vanguard @ #10 (7A) Buchholz Bobcats
The Knights travel to Gainesville looking to rid the area of its Cat infestation. The Bobcats are wreaking havoc with their recent Friday night attacks. The Medieval Minutemen from Ocala better show up in full armor if they plan on surviving their trip into the jungle. Something tells me we’re headed for another Cat attack.

Coach T’s Loser: Vanguard (Buchholz 31, Vanguard 13)

(1A) Hawthorne Hornets @ (4A) PK Yonge Blue Wave
The pesky Stingers from H-Town head to PK Yonge having poisoned the hopes of their foes in recent weeks. The Blue Breakers are looking to regenerate after last week’s efforts hit the rocks. C.I.’s swarm will try and survive the flood and pull off another big win. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, the Hornets won’t survive the wash and will be exterminated by Coach Johnson’s baby Tsunamis.

Coach T’s Loser: Hawthorne (PKY 20, Hawthorne 13)
