Even though there were a few upsets sprinkled throughout the state playoffs, the favored teams walked away with the state titles in the end. Only two of our previous No. 1 teams did not finish on top. Pine Crest was able to defeat previous No. 1 Lake Highland Prep in the Class 4A championship game 63-57, while Dr. Phillips was upended in the Class 8A region 1 semifinal by West Orange. Hialeah Gardens would eventually win the Class 8A state title in impressive fashion. The remaining No. 1 teams (Chipley 1A, OCP 2A, Tampa Prep 3A, Lake Wales 5A, Norland 6A, Ely 7A) showed why they were heavily favored as they walked into the playoffs with a bulls eye on their back and waltzed out of the Lakeland Center with gold around their necks.
