- December 2nd is Stephen Smith of the Trenton football team. Smith threw a game-winning 54-yard touchdown pass to Hamp Cheevers in the first quarter to help lead the Trenton Tigers (12-1) to their first state football championship in school history with a 14-0 win over Blountstown in the Class 1A state championship game at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Smith, who led the baseball team to a state title in May, finished the season with 1,003 yards passing, 13 TD’s and only one interception, along with over 600 yards rushing and six scores. It was the area’s first state football title in 16 years (Chiefland ’97).
