P.K. Yonge’s Willie Powers wins 500th game (2020-21 Lady Blue Wave preview)

Congratulations to P.K. Yonge girls basketball coach Willie Powers.

On Monday night, Nov. 16, the Lady Blue Wave defeated visiting Madison County 50-42 to give Coach Powers his 500th victory.

Powers now has an overall record of 501-162 with eight final four trips to Lakeland, two state championships and one State Runner Up finish, plus 18 district championships.

The Lady Blue Wave will be young and rebuilding this season with one 7th-grader, five freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors, and only one senior.

“This group has really worked hard but varsity experience will hurt.” Powers said. “I can’t wait to see what happens but 7th-grader Ashlynn Young, 10th grader Ilayzia Wilcox, junior Sydney English and senior Grace Cox all return to help us with the youth!”

On Tuesday night, the Lady Blue Wave moved to 2-0 with a 67-24 win at Hamilton County (Jasper). Young led all scorers with 15 points.

P.K. Yonge’s game scheduled for Thursday at Trenton has been postponed due to Covid protocols at Trenton. The Lady Blue Wave will now travel to Trenton on Monday, Dec. 14.
