Friday, November 23rd, was Ralph Webb of the Gainesville football team. Webb helped the Hurricanes (12-0) move on to the third round of the Class 6A state playoffs by rushing for 174 yards on 16 carries in a 21-10 win over Vanguard (Ocala). The senior had a 72-yard scoring run to give the ‘Canes a 7-0 lead with 7:10 to play in the first quarter, but his 36-yard TD run with 2:18 to play iced the game.
Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week Presented by Mark McGriff’s State Farm Insurance of Gainesville for the week of November 19th
- Ronald Timmons of the Columbia (Lake City) football team. Timmons carried the ball 22 times for 216 yards and two TD’s as Columbia advanced to the third round of the Class 6A football playoffs with a 34-8 win against previously unbeaten St. Augustine. The senior, who had a 53-yard scoring run to open the scoring, became the school’s all-time leading rusher with 1,546 yards, as he passed Don London’s 1997 record.
