Here are the final state baseball rankings for all nine FHSAA classifications along with the All-classification rankings. Teams in the Prep Zone’s coverage area are in bold.
This year a total of seven schools won their first state baseball title in school history. That’s seven of nine, and only one repeat champion.
But of the seven, at least two were favored to bring home a championship, including nationally-ranked teams Parkland Stoneman Douglas in 9A and Fort Myers Canterbury in 4A. Both teams are ranked top five in the country by MaxPreps. They are also No. 1 in the state in their respective classes in ThePrepZone.com state baseball final rankings of 2016.
Canterbury (31-1) won the 3A title with a 6-0 win against Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic. However, it took a 2-1 win in 11 innings against Tallahassee Maclay to advance. They also defeated #4 St. Petersburg Northside Christian and #7 Sarasota Out of Door in regional play.
Douglas (27-2) defeated defending state champion Miami Columbus, 3-0, to win its first title in their 23-year history. The Eagles had to defeat 9A #1 Winter Garden West Orange, 3-2, in the state semifinals to advance.
Douglas and Canterbury are ranked first and third, respectively, in the Florida all-classification rankings, but powerhouse Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy is second.
The Mavericks (29-2) defeated first-time state semifinalist Citra North Marion, 14-2 (5 innings), in the state semifinals. They faced Lynn Haven Mosley (20-10) in the title game for the third time in the past four years and defeated the Dolphins, 10-4, to win back-to-back state titles, including their sixth in the past seven years.
West Orange (27-3), ranked 2nd in the state poll, finished fourth in the all-classification rankings, while Jacksonville Bolles rounds out the top five.
The Bulldogs (28-3) won their seventh state title with a 1-0 win against Miami Monsignor Pace in the 5A state title game. They also defeated Melbourne Central Catholic, 5-0, handing the Hustlers their first loss to a Florida team this season. Of the three losses by Bolles, none were to teams from the Sunshine State.
The other first-time state champions who finished No. 1 in the state include: 8A Lutz Steinbrenner (27-5), 7A Tampa Gaither (20-9), 4A Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian (21-9), 2A Lake Worth Trinity Christian (23-6) and 1A Mayo Lafayette (21-6).
