Despite a 40-0 loss at Class 3A Fort White last Friday night, the Union County (Lake Butler) football team is still a No. 4 seed in the latest Class 1A-Region 3 projections. At the end of the season, the top four teams in the region will make the state playoffs.
The Tigers (6-2) had several players out due to injury against the Indians, including star running back Charles Strong, an FSU commit. Strong, who was recognized as our Trophy Shop Athlete of the Week following an overtime win against Hawthorne, is already over 1,000 yards for the season (134 carries for 1,059 yards).
Currently, Union County is fourth in the region behind state-ranked Madison County (8-0) and No. 4 Dixie County (Cross City) (8-0), who are first and fourth respectively in Class 1A, and unbeaten Lafayette (Mayo) (7-0). Chiefland (4-4) flip-flopped with Bell and is now fifth in the standings, followed by the Bulldogs (3-4) at No. 6, and Branford (3-4), Hilliard (2-3) and Hamilton County (Jasper) (0-7).
Regardless of the margin of victory in the Tigers’ last game, the score of a game does not affect the number of points a team receives. In other words, a score of 7-6 will result in the same number of points as a score of 40-0.
This week the Tigers will host Williston, which is currently sixth in Class 1A-Region 4.
